On November 14, 2024, the Nofima team, a key partner in the VeriFish consortium, made an impactful contribution to the Catch Welfare Platform Conference, a leading event that gathers experts and stakeholders to address welfare practices in the seafood supply chain. The conference is a vital forum for discussing advancements in animal welfare, from capture methods to consumer education, fostering collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and industry professionals.
During the conference, Themistoklis Altintzoglou, alongside colleagues Ragnhild Aven Svalheim and Florent Govaerts, presented their work on translating operational welfare indicators into Catch Welfare Communication Indicators, a key component of the VeriFish sustainable indicator framework. These innovative indicators aim to enhance transparency and responsibility in the seafood industry by improving how welfare considerations are communicated to stakeholders. Early tests of these indicators have yielded promising results, showcasing their potential to foster better welfare practices and informed consumer choices.
The talk was part of a broader session at the conference focusing on welfare indicators and their role in shaping sustainable practices across fisheries and aquaculture. The Catch Welfare Platform, supported by organizations dedicated to animal welfare and sustainable seafood, provides a collaborative space to align operational practices with the growing demand for ethical and sustainable seafood.
This development highlights how VeriFish and its partners are addressing critical issues like animal welfare in the seafood industry, aligning with the project’s mission to create a comprehensive framework of verifiable sustainability indicators.
