European consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their food choices, particularly seafood.. However, understanding seafood sustainability involves examining a range of factors across the entire production chain- from nutritional values and environmental impact to animal welfare and socio-economic considerations.
Transparency in seafood labelling, mandated by EU policies, has been crucial in fostering responsible consumer behaviour. Yet, existing regulations fall short in addressing environmental and social aspects comprehensively. This gap highlights the need for innovative solutions, and VeriFish is stepping up to the challenge.
Launched in May 2024, Verifish is a two-year initiative to simplify seafood sustainability. In just seven months, we´ve delivered a significant milestone: the first draft of our Indicator Framework. This framework encompasses environmental, social, and nutritional dimensions, offering a tool for stakeholders – from seafood producers and retailers to NGOS and policy decision makers – to assess and enhance their sustainability practices. By providing tailored guidelines, the framework empowers the to better communicate their efforts, fostering trust and driving responsible seafood consumption across Europe..
The indicator has been shared in preview with the group of experts that will support and guide the VeriFish team during this journey, and a special thanks go to them (External Advisory Board). They work in international and European associations and initiatives in the area of fish and food, including FAO, EATiP, the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST) initiative, the Fish Tales Foundation, the Italian API Associazione Piscicoltori Italiani, ICES, the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), STECF and the Market Advisory Council gave valuable feedback to the first framework of indicators.
What´s Next in 2025
Next year, we will share the Indicator framework with a broader European audience, inviting feedback from all stakeholders. Join us at key events like Aquaculture 2025 (New Orleans), Seafood EXPO (Barcelona) and AQUA25 (Valencia) or participate in our Community of Practice. Sign up for our Newsletter to stay updated and contribute to upcoming surveys and consultations. 2025 will also mark the debut of the VeriFish mobile app prototype – a user friendly tool to empower citizens to make responsible and informed choices. Alongside this, we will launch innovative media products, guidelines and good practice recommendations to enhance communication about sustainable seafood.
Sustainable seafood practices ensure we can enjoy the health benefits of seafood while preserving our oceans for future generations. Let’s work together in 2025 to shape a more transparent, informed, and sustainable future for seafood. Join us in this collaborative journey towards sustainable seafood practices.
Sincerely: The VeriFish Team 🐟
