On March 28, 2025, the town of Klaksvík in the Faroe Islands hosted a special event marking the 5-year anniversary of Sjókovin, a leading independent research institute dedicated to fisheries and aquaculture. The event was more than a celebration—it was a forum for forward-looking dialogue on the most pressing challenges and opportunities in the seafood sector.
Organised by the Ministry of Fisheries and Infrastructure of the Faroe Islands, the conference convened a wide spectrum of participants, including policy makers, researchers, and representatives from across the fisheries and aquaculture industries. Among the key voices contributing to this vibrant exchange was Petter Olsen, senior scientist at NOFIMA and core partner in the VeriFish project.

Exploring the Future of Traceability
Petter Olsen delivered a compelling presentation exploring the role of traceability and the risks of food fraud in today’s seafood systems. Drawing from decades of experience in European research and development projects, he presented current thinking from the VeriFish project on how digital technologies—specifically blockchain—could strengthen traceability systems and better safeguard seafood supply chains.
His talk, titled “Should Traceability Systems in the Aquaculture Industry be Based on Blockchain Technology?”, was based in part on the ongoing EU-funded projects VeriFish and EFF-CoP, as well as insights from Nofima Report 5/2022 on the application, limitations, and benefits of blockchain in the seafood industry.
Towards Transparency and Trust
The core message of Olsen’s presentation echoed a key value of the VeriFish project: transparency builds trust. As seafood supply chains grow increasingly complex, the ability to verify the origin, sustainability, and authenticity of products is more critical than ever. Blockchain technology, while not a universal solution, offers powerful potential for improving data integrity and building consumer confidence.
By showcasing VeriFish at this Nordic-focused conference, Olsen underscored the importance of international collaboration and technology-driven innovation in shaping a more responsible and traceable seafood system.
