On 19 February 2026, the VeriFish project will take part in AquaFarm 2026 (Pordenone, Italy) with a dedicated workshop focused on how verifiable indicators can strengthen sustainability communication in aquaculture and seafood value chains.

Workshop details
Title: VeriFish framework of indicators and tools for communicating sustainable aquaculture
Date & time: 19 February 2026, 14:30–15:30
Venue: Arena AquaFarm, Pordenone (Italy)
Why this workshop
Sustainability in aquaculture is increasingly under scrutiny—from environmental performance and animal welfare to nutrition and socio-economic impacts. At the same time, producers and value-chain actors face real challenges in communicating these aspects clearly, consistently, and credibly to consumers and decision-makers.
The VeriFish project addresses this gap by developing a structured and transparent indicator framework that translates complex sustainability data into information that can be understood and trusted.
What will be presented
During the session, VeriFish will introduce its seafood sustainability indicator framework, built around three core pillars:
- Environmental
- Nutritional
- Social & Economic
The framework is aligned with internationally recognised guidelines and datasets (including FAO, ICES, EFSA, ASC, GlobalG.A.P. and ILO sources) and prioritises indicators that are measurable, reliable and actionable.
Participants will also be introduced to the VeriFish web application, which operationalises the framework and allows users to explore sustainability parameters starting from individual species.
Engaging producers and the value chain
A key focus of the workshop is the role of producer-provided data. VeriFish is actively inviting aquaculture producers and value-chain actors to:
- Assess the proposed indicators and data sources
- Discuss barriers and benefits related to data sharing
- Contribute information on sustainability practices at production level
This dialogue is essential to ensure robustness, relevance and real-world usability of the framework.
Panel discussion
The workshop will feature a moderated panel discussion with contributions from:
- Aquaculture producers
- Certification and sustainability organisations
- Research and public institutions
The discussion will explore practical questions around data sharing, consumer expectations, and how indicators can be used effectively in sustainability communication.
The bigger picture
By bringing together science, industry and communication, VeriFish aims to support meaningful, transparent and credible sustainability messaging—helping communication professionals, retailers, policymakers, certification bodies and producers speak a common language that consumers can understand and trust.
