The OverFished! card game, developed within the VeriFish project, is now available in English, Spanish, Italian, French, Greek, and Norwegian. Additional language versions are currently in preparation and will be released in the coming months.
This multilingual expansion marks an important step in making ocean literacy and sustainable seafood communication accessible to a wider European audience.
Learning About Seafood Sustainability Through Play
OverFished! is an educational card game designed to introduce players to the complexity of seafood sustainability in a simple and engaging way. Using real fish species and fisheries-related concepts, the game encourages players to reflect on topics such as:
- biodiversity and species diversity
- fishing pressure and stock status
- sustainable versus unsustainable practices
- the balance between exploitation and ecosystem health
By turning these themes into a playful experience, OverFished! helps translate scientific and policy discussions into something tangible and understandable for non-experts.
A Tool for Education, Outreach and Engagement
The game has been developed to be flexible and easy to use in a wide range of settings, including:
- schools and universities
- workshops and public events
- consumer awareness activities
- family and informal learning contexts
OverFished! does not aim to provide simplistic answers. Instead, it opens conversations and encourages critical thinking about how seafood choices relate to ecosystems, food systems and long-term sustainability.
Why Multilingual Matters
Seafood sustainability is a shared European challenge that crosses borders, languages and cultures. Making OverFished! available in multiple languages allows educators, organisations and communities to use the same tool while adapting discussions to local contexts and realities.
This aligns with VeriFish’s broader objective: improving how sustainability information is communicated, understood and used across the seafood value chain.
