During the Catch Welfare Platform Conference held at Forteiland IJmuiden in the Netherlands, VeriFish convened a dedicated working lunch to advance dialogue on one of the seafood sector’s most pressing challenges: how to make aquatic animal welfare visible, measurable and integrated into sustainability decision-making.
Every year, an estimated 100 billion fish are farmed globally, while trillions more are caught in the wild for human consumption. Despite this scale, welfare considerations for aquatic animals have historically received limited attention in policy, markets and consumer communication.
At the conference, VeriFish contributed as both presenter and facilitator, sharing evidence-based tools designed to bring clarity to this complex topic. By using scientifically validated data and verifiable indicators, the VeriFish approach supports policymakers, producers, retailers and citizens in understanding how welfare, sustainability and product quality are interconnected.
A highlight of the event was the VeriFish working lunch, where representatives from fisheries, aquaculture, retail and seafood associations provided direct feedback on the VeriFish Indicator Framework and web application. Discussions focused on how the tool can better communicate responsible seafood production and consumption patterns, and how welfare data can be integrated alongside environmental, nutritional and socio-economic information.
The exchanges reinforced a key message: aquatic animal welfare is not an optional add-on. It is central to sustainability performance, product quality and the social licence of fisheries and aquaculture. By combining scientific research, field data and stakeholder perspectives from Europe and beyond, VeriFish aims to support more grounded, globally relevant conversations on sustainable seafood.
This video captures the spirit of that dialogue — showing how complexity can be transformed into informed decisions through transparent, data-driven approaches.
