Between March 18th and 20th, 2025, the VeriFish consortium held an in-person meeting in Heraklion, Crete. This three-day gathering provided an opportunity for project partners from across Europe to collaboratively assess progress and outline the next steps for advancing seafood sustainability communication. The meeting’s location—set against the inspiring backdrop of the Cretan landscape—reflected the project’s ongoing commitment to connecting science with real-world impact.

Advancing the Indicator Framework
One of the central accomplishments of the meeting was finalising the list of verifiable data sources for the VeriFish Indicator Framework. This framework forms the scientific backbone of the project, aiming to provide measurable indicators across three sustainability dimensions: environmental, social, and nutritional.
Special attention was given to integrating socio-economic considerations into the framework, acknowledging that seafood sustainability must also account for human well-being, livelihoods, and equity across the value chain. These discussions highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the inclusion of diverse knowledge systems.
Designing Practical Tools: Factsheets and Media Resources
The team also worked on the development of sustainability factsheets for fishers. These tools are intended to facilitate self-assessment by seafood producers and to support transparency in the communication of sustainable practices. With a user-friendly format, the factsheets will help translate the VeriFish indicators into practice.
Meanwhile, partners co-designed a series of media products aimed at various stakeholders. These include educational materials such as flashcards and calendars, as well as consumer-oriented visuals like posters and narratives. All of these products aim to increase understanding and engagement with sustainability issues in seafood production and consumption.

Expanding Engagement: The VeriFish Community of Practice
Stakeholder engagement was a key focus of the meeting. Partners identified a wide range of associations, professionals, and community actors who could contribute to the VeriFish Community of Practice. The Community is envisioned as a dynamic space for sharing knowledge, gathering feedback, and promoting collective action toward more responsible seafood systems.
Coordinating Next Steps
The meeting also addressed upcoming milestones, including the release of the children’s media products, the first prototype of the VeriFish web app, and further outreach and dissemination efforts. Strategic planning sessions helped clarify roles, align activities, and define key messages.
Gathering in person created space for deeper conversations, mutual learning, and stronger connections among partners. It reinforced the project’s collaborative ethos and laid the groundwork for the next phase of implementation.
