Innovation in aquaculture is often associated with new technologies, production systems or scientific advances. However, as highlighted by David Bassett, General Secretary of EATiP, innovation also includes how sustainability is defined, measured and communicated to markets and stakeholders.
In his contribution as a member of the VeriFish External Advisory Board, Bassett emphasises the importance of aligning definitions, terminology and indicators for sustainable aquaculture production. Without shared understanding, sustainability claims risk remaining fragmented and difficult to adopt across research, policy and industry.
VeriFish addresses this challenge by developing verifiable indicators that can be used consistently by scientists, policymakers and producers, including small and medium-sized enterprises that account for a large share of European aquaculture production. These indicators can also support uptake through mechanisms such as the EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism, helping translate research outputs into practice.
