VeriFish has been featured in a Euronews Ocean documentary produced in partnership with the European Commission, highlighting how digital tools can help citizens make more informed and sustainable seafood choices.
The report, “Scan before you buy: why two new apps aim to change seafood shopping”, explores a growing paradox across Europe: while more consumers want to buy seafood responsibly, they often lack clear, trustworthy information at the moment of choice. At fish counters, in restaurants, or when browsing labels, essential questions frequently remain unanswered — where was the fish caught or farmed, by which method, and what are the environmental, nutritional, and welfare implications?
The documentary shows how overfishing, climate change, invasive species, and habitat degradation are putting increasing pressure on the resources local fisheries and coastal communities rely on. In places such as Cyprus, declining local catches mean that seafood is increasingly sourced from aquaculture or imports, while consumers struggle to understand what their purchase actually means for the sea — even when they are motivated to choose more sustainable options.
Within this context, VeriFish is presented as a practical response to this information gap. The project uses QR codes on menus and product labels to give direct access to verified data on sustainability, nutrition, provenance, and traceability. By scanning a code with a smartphone, consumers can instantly view transparent information about the seafood they are about to buy or order, including details about the company that caught or produced it.
The documentary underlines that VeriFish is not about reducing sustainability to a single logo or score. Instead, it focuses on making complex, evidence-based information understandable and accessible, supporting informed decision-making while encouraging seafood businesses to voluntarily share high-quality data and distinguish themselves through transparency.

The Euronews episode also features the sister initiative MrGoodFish3.0, which helps shoppers check species information and consider sustainable alternatives before buying. Together, VeriFish and MrGoodFish3.0 reinforce the documentary’s central message: good intentions alone are rarely enough. Without clear, credible information at the counter or on the menu, sustainable choices remain difficult to act on.
Being featured in Euronews Ocean highlights the relevance of the VeriFish approach at European level and its contribution to the transition towards more transparent, sustainable, and resilient seafood systems — connecting citizens, producers, and ecosystems through better information at the moment it matters most.
