What does seafood bring to our diets — and who gets access to it?
Seafood is not just a protein source; it is a nutritional powerhouse. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, essential vitamins, and minerals, it plays a crucial role in healthy diets, especially for vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
But not all seafood is nutritionally equal — and not all people have equal access to it. That’s why the nutritional pillar will evaluate both the nutrient quality of seafood species and the social relevance of those nutrients in real diets. It will also examine issues like affordability and accessibility.
VeriFish is currently finalising this pillar with the support of public health experts, dietitians, and nutritional scientists.
Our aim is to:
Identify which species offer the highest nutritional value
Support policies that promote nutrient-rich seafood in schools, hospitals, and low-income communities
Bridge the gap between sustainability and nutrition policy
