Promoting Sustainable Seafood Choices through Consumer Behaviour
Senior Researcher at Nofima Shares Insights on Sustainability
Themistoklis (Themis) Altintzoglou, a senior researcher at Nofima, has spent the last 17 years investigating consumer behaviour to understand what drives seafood consumption. His research is focused on motivating consumers to choose and enjoy seafood more frequently, recognising seafood’s unique role as one of the most sustainable sources of protein available today.
According to Themis, sustainability has become a critical issue as global food demand continues to rise. Seafood from both aquaculture and fisheries offers a promising pathway to sustainably feeding the growing population, but significant improvements are still needed. Through VeriFish, Themis and his colleagues are actively working on practical guidance and clear communication tools designed to help consumers make informed decisions about seafood products.
By making sustainability understandable and accessible, VeriFish empowers consumers to opt for products that benefit their health and the planet. Themis strongly believes that by guiding consumer choices effectively, we can significantly enhance the sustainability of our seafood systems.
