Ensuring Sustainable Food Choices through Clear Indicators
EuroFIR’s Secretary General Highlights the Role of VeriFish
Siân Astley, Secretary General of EuroFIR, has a clear vision of the critical connection between nutritious, safe, and sustainable food systems. As leader of a Brussels-based non-profit dedicated to providing reliable food data, Siân emphasizes the urgent need for robust indicators that can effectively measure sustainability and nutritional benefits in seafood.
VeriFish aims precisely to fill this gap by identifying and developing an integrated set of clear, scientifically robust indicators that stakeholders can rely on to assess sustainability. Siân explains that the project’s goal is to create a reliable framework that allows industry actors and consumers to make choices that align with their nutritional, sustainability, and provenance concerns.
Recognising the complexity involved in establishing such a framework, Siân underscores VeriFish’s role in simplifying sustainability communication, enabling informed and responsible seafood consumption. She believes that the transparency VeriFish offers will help the seafood industry deliver products that genuinely reflect consumer expectations, ensuring both human and planetary health.
