On 17–18 June 2025, VeriFish took part in the Eurofish International Conference “Predators and Invasive Species – A Threat or a Business Opportunity”, held at Swissôtel Tallinn in cooperation with the Estonian Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture. The event brought together researchers, policymakers, and industry actors to discuss how growing populations of predator and invasive species are affecting aquatic ecosystems, the seafood value chain, and fisheries livelihoods across Europe and beyond.
Although VeriFish was not formally represented in the programme, the event offered a valuable platform to strengthen the project’s network and engage with stakeholders from across the seafood sector. Ixai Salvo (Eurofish), Work Package Leader for Communication and Dissemination in VeriFish, attended the conference and introduced the project to a range of participants, including researchers, regulators, and private sector representatives. These informal exchanges highlighted growing interest in transparent, science-based approaches to sustainability—particularly in the context of novel or emerging species.

The conference explored how species like king crab, signal crayfish, round goby, and jellyfish—often framed as threats to biodiversity—can also become sources of innovation and economic opportunity when sustainably managed. These insights align with VeriFish’s broader mission: to support informed seafood consumption through verifiable indicators that consider both environmental and socio-economic factors.
Understanding and communicating the impacts of non-native and opportunistic species is critical to building resilient, sustainable food systems. As such, engaging in events like this conference ensures that VeriFish remains connected to ongoing policy and industry conversations, particularly around how emerging species can be evaluated, integrated into supply chains, and communicated to consumers.

Stay tuned for more updates as VeriFish continues its mission to enhance transparency, traceability, and informed decision-making across Europe’s seafood landscape.
