In the first entry of our new series โ2 Questions, 6 Perspectives,โ we hear from Christine Absil, a seasoned sustainability expert working on the VeriFish project.
Christine brings a wealth of experience in fisheries management, aquaculture, certification, and sustainable sourcing. Her insights reflect years of work in aligning seafood production with ecological and social responsibility.
Q1: Why is sustainability in fisheries and aquaculture important today?
โSeafood can be very sustainable, but itโs very complicated to find out which seafood is sustainable. What do you have to look for? What are the indicators that define what is sustainable or what is not?โ
Christine emphasizes the complexity behind seafood sustainability. While seafood can be a low-impact, nutritious choiceโespecially compared to other protein sourcesโdetermining what is truly sustainable requires clarity and accessible information.
Q2: In what ways is VeriFish contributing to raising awareness about sustainable seafood production and consumption?
โSeafood is a very good alternative to, for example, meat as a protein source because it generally has a low carbon footprint. Thatโs why information on seafood is very relevant. There are many species, from different areas, caught with different gearโand all of that matters.โ
VeriFish, Christine explains, helps consumers and stakeholders navigate this complexity. By developing verifiable sustainability indicators, the project aims to make it easier to evaluate and communicate what sustainable seafood really meansโacross species, regions, and production methods.
